No counting scale will ever work if there is a significant variation in the weight of the items. The amount of error in the final result will be dependent on how much the weight of individual pieces vary from each other.
The larger the initial sample (say 100 pieces versus 10 pieces) the better results the counting scale can provide since it averages out any variations.
